Students should write a letter introducing themselves to you or tell you about their summer.

Pictures of Students

At the beginning of the year I take a digital picture of all my students. Then I use these pictures for many things including a page of head shots for my substitutes and visitors, tags to help the students learn each other's names, and for centers and the word wall.

Teacher Me In A Bag

At the beginning of the year, I introduce myself using 'Me In A Bag.' I put a few items that represent me in a large paper sack. In my sack, I put a paintbrush because I'm an artist, my favorite book, something from my favorite sports teams, pictures of my family, and something my teams I coach, and from my college. I sit on the carpet with the kids and I explain the significance of each item in the bag. This discussion helps the kids get to know me as a person. During the first two weeks I give each child a turn to bring in his/her own 'Me In A Bag,' to share with the class.

Play "That's Me"

Students stand up and say "That's me!" when a statement that is read is true about them. Ask questions like:

  • I like to read
  • I went to the beach/pool this summer
  • I have... brother(s)/ sister(s)/am an only child
  • I left the state this summer
  • I ate breakfast today
  • I have a pet
  • I went to this school in 1st grade
  • I like pizza
