Groundhog Day
February 2nd |
 |
 |
|
Popular legend tells us that a groundhog awakens from hibernation and peeks out of his hole on February 2. If he sees his shadow, it indicates there will be 6 more weeks of winter.
If it is cloudy and he does not see his shadow, Spring is on its way!
A groundhog is also called a woodchuck. Groundhogs are aniamls that go into a deep sleep when the weather is cold. This deep sleep is called hibernation. When warmer weather comes, the groundhog's body warms up, and it begins to wake up. A groundhog lives underground in a burrow. It digs its burrows with its front feet. |

Most of the things that I use for Groundhog's day are copyrighted and I am not able to include them on this page. I have listed some of the ideas that we use in our classroom and some of the worksheets I have made. |

|
| Groundhog Box Home: Find a box large enough for a child to crawl in & let them decorate it like a groundhog's home. Paint it , draw trees on it, etc.. Then let them pretend to be grounghog's crawling in & out of their "hole" |

Materials:
Groundhog printout
paper plates-1 1/2 per student
crayons
stapler
popsicle stick
glue
|
Groundhog's Day Paper Plate: The top of the paper plate is colored for the sky. Then another paper plate is cut in half. This one is colored brown at the bottom and green at the very top to resemble the grass. The brown is to be the underground part. Staple this half paper plate at the bottom of the full paper plate. Make a groundhog puppet attached to a craft stick. When you staple the half plate to the bottom, leave a slot between the staples to stick the puppet through. The children can show how the groundhog comes up out of the ground to check for his shadow.

February 2nd
Psst! Mr. Groundhog,
Today is your day.
Come out of your den.
From your winter's stay.
Is winter over
and spring on its way?
Is that your shadow?
Will you run away? |
Mr. Groundhog
[tune: "Frere Jacques"]
Mr. Groundhog, Mr. Groundhog,
Are you there? Are you there?
Will you see your shadow,
We all want to know,
Groundhog Day, Groundhog Day. |
I'm a Little Groundhog
(Sung to: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little groundhog,
Furry and Brown.
When winter comes
I sleep underground.
I'm curled up
As cozy as can be.
When it's spring,
Please wake me! |
GROUNDHOG, GROUNDHOG
Groundhog, Groundhog, popping up today.
Groundhog, Groundhog, can you play?
If you see your shadow, hide away.
If there is no shadow, you can stay.
Groundhog, Groundhog, popping up today.
Groundhog, Groundhog, can you play? |
